Plot Summary & Review
Prince Akeem of Zamunda is summoned before his ailing father, King Jaffe Joffer, on the 30th anniversary of his marriage to Lisa McDowell. After his aide, Semmi had enticed two women into spending the night with them while Akeem was still searching for his future queen, Jaffe, and his shaman Baba reveal to a perplexed Akeem that he had sired a son during his first visit to Queens, New York, Jaffe, and his shaman Baba reveal to a perplexed Akeem that he had sired a son during his first visit in Queens One of them mistakenly sedated Akeem, leading to an unremembered tryst. Because only a male successor can inherit the kingdom under Zamundian custom, and Akeem has only daughters, he is forced to return to Queens to rescue his son. Otherwise, Zamunda may face a hostile takeover by Nexdoria, Zamunda’s militaristic neighbor, whose dictator, General Izzi (the brother of Akeem’s initial planned bride-to-be), has been pressuring Akeem’s eldest daughter Meeka to marry his foppish son, Idi.
Following King Jaffe’s funeral and succession to the throne, Akeem and Semmi return to Queens in search of his illegitimate son. Head barber Mr. Clarence informs them that the kid in question is Lavelle Junson, a ticket scalper who hustles outside of Madison Square Garden, during a jovial reunion with the barbershop crew with whom they connected. Following an unpleasant reunion with Lavelle’s mother Mary, Akeem returns them to Zamunda, much to the chagrin of his family. When General Izzi learns of this, he comes to bring his daughter Bopoto to Lavelle as a last-ditch attempt to take the throne of Zamunda, but Lavelle must first pass a test to become a royal prince.
Lavelle is hesitant to put himself in danger at first, but he befriends Mirembe, a royal groomer, who informs him of Akeem’s search for his queen and urges him to pursue his own path. Lavelle then invites Mary’s brother, Reem, to Zamunda, where he receives coaching on how to reconcile his urban upbringing with his new royal status. Lavelle gradually comes to terms with Akeem’s family, and with the help of his brains and some forced courage, he succeeds in becoming Prince of Zamunda. However, Lavelle overhears a conversation between Akeem and Izzi during his accession party, leading him to assume that Akeem is simply manipulating him, and he, Mirembe, Mary, and Reem return to New York.
Akeem returns to the United States after a pep talk from his father-in-law Cleo, who reminds him of late Queen Aoleon’s progressive intellect, while Semmi is left to stall Izzi, who plans to return the next day to either see Bopoto marry Lavelle or declare war.
When Akeem returns to Queens, he discovers that Lavelle and Mirembe are preparing to marry. He grants them his blessing and frees Lavelle from his marriage to Bopoto, recalling his own life tale. Meanwhile, when General Izzi invades the palace, Semmi and the princesses, all trained staff fighters, fend off and restrain him, forcing him to attempt a more diplomatic route. When Akeem returns home, he alters the royal succession by allowing his daughter Meeka to succeed to the throne in the event of his death, while Lavelle is appointed as an ambassador to the United States and General Izzi establishes Nexdoria as a peaceful political and trade relationship.
The film finishes with a lavish celebration at the royal palace, complete with special visitors from Queens and the performance of the Sexual Chocolate song “We Are Family.”
