Plot

During the 1970s, N. Richard Nash created the script Macho, which was twice rejected by 20th Century Fox. As a result, on June 11, 1975, he published Cry Macho, a novel based on the script. After the novel received great reviews, Nash re-pitched the film, keeping the original screenplay intact, and sold it to Fox and a few other studios before his death in 2000. Several stars, including Clint Eastwood, Roy Scheider, Burt Lancaster, Pierce Brosnan, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, were in talks to star at various times.

In 1988, Eastwood opted out of the picture to reprise his role as Dirty Harry in The Dead Pool, and in 1991, filming on a remake starring Scheider began in Mexico, but it was never completed. In 2003, Schwarzenegger was offered the chance to feature in either a remake of Westworld or a remake of Cry Macho.

Once choosing the latter, producer Albert S. Ruddy encouraged Schwarzenegger to put the production on hold after he was elected governor of California. After his time expired, he stated in 2011 that he will star in the film Cry Macho, which would begin filming in New Mexico and be directed by Brad Furman.

The film was canceled soon after Schwarzenegger’s divorce from Maria Shriver, following a controversy in which it was revealed that he had fathered a son with a housekeeper a decade prior.
