Deadlock 2021 Review

The two couples appear to have nothing in common at first. Andrej and Barbara are members of the Slovene financial elite, whereas Emir and Mejra are poor, working-class immigrants from Bosnia. The age of their children, Mirsad and Anja, is the only thing that connects them. They may not know each other, but they are both at the same hospital, and one of their hearts may be a perfect match for the other. Negotiations, arguments, begging, and pleading occur, and, as is typical of such argument-based dramas, people switch sides and make and break alliances as time runs out and they are stuck in an impasse.

Although there are superficial parallels with Roman Polanski’s Carnage [+], the two films have little in common aside from the apartment setting and debate dynamics. Möderndorfer is more concerned in morality plays and questions like whether one life is worth more than another based on class or ethnicity. Parenting, as well as sentiments of anguish and imminent loss, face the same challenge.

Möderndorfer embraces his theatre background to the utmost for the first time in his filmmaking career, thus his propensity of talking through the characters isn’t as much of an issue here. On the other hand, he uses situational shots from outside the building and flashbacks to break up the monotony of the environment, however his inclination to over-explain causes some issues. He can rely on his actors, particularly the masculine members of the cast, fortunately. Musevski’s intuitive, heartfelt, “all in” attitude is ideal for the picture, and Fürst’s sleazy charm is also effective.
