Ghostbusters Movie Storyline

Professors of parapsychology Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Egon Spengler investigate the paranormal at Columbia University. The university dean fires them and doubts the veracity of their research after their first encounter with a ghost manifesting at the New York Public Library. As a result, they form “Ghostbusters,” a paranormal investigation and removal agency based in a decommissioned firehouse. Although business is slow at first, they construct high-tech nuclear-powered technology to capture and contain spirits.

Dana Barrett, a cellist, summons the Ghostbusters after a strange incident in her residence. She claims to have seen a demonic dog-like entity that only says “Zuul.” In a futile attempt to attract Dana, Ray and Egon conduct research on Zuul, while Venkman offers to check Dana’s residence. The Ghostbusters are called in to rid the Sedgewick Hotel of a gluttonous ghost. Egon tells the party that crossing the energy streams of their proton pack weapons could result in a catastrophic explosion because they failed to properly test their equipment. They apprehend the ghost and place it in the firehouse’s ecto-containment unit.

Environmental Protection Agency inspector Walter Peck is suspicious of their operation and requests an evaluation of their equipment, but Venkman refuses. Egon later warns that the containment unit is approaching capacity and that supernatural energy is surging across the city. When Venkman meets with Dana, he explains to her that Zuul was a demigod who served “Gozer the Gozerian,” a shape-shifting deity of devastation, as a servant. When Dana returns home, she is possessed by Zuul, and her neighbor, Louis Tully, is possessed by a similar creature.

Peck returns with law enforcement and city workers to arrest the Ghostbusters and detonate their containment device, resulting in an explosion that releases the captured spirits. In the midst of the chaos, Louis/Vinz makes his way to Dana/apartment Zuul’s complex. Ray and Egon disclose Dana’s building was created as an antenna to attract and concentrate spiritual energy in order to summon Gozer and bring about the apocalypse by Ivo Shandor, the leader of a Gozer-worshipping cult. Faced with ghostly mayhem throughout the city, the Ghostbusters persuade the mayor to let them loose.

Dana/Zuul and Louis/Vinz open the portal between realms and transform into demonic dogs as the Ghostbusters travel to the apartment building roof. When the Ghostbusters attempt to retaliate, Gozer comes in the form of a woman and attacks them. “Choose the shape of the destructor,” her disembodied voice commands the Ghostbusters.

Gozer reappears in the shape of a monstrous Stay Puft Marshmallow Man who begins destroying the city as Ray mistakenly recalls a favorite corporate mascot from his childhood. Egon instructs the crew to cross their proton energy streams at the dimensional gate, despite his earlier advice. The subsequent explosion obliterates Gozer’s avatar, relegating it to its original dimension and closing the portal. Dana and Louis are rescued from the wreckage, and the Ghostbusters are greeted as heroes on the streets.

Production

Since “Ghostbusters” was legally restricted by the Universal Studios-owned 1970s children’s show The Ghost Busters, other titles were explored for the picture. “Ghoststoppers,” “Ghostbreakers,” and “Ghostsmashers” were among the options. Fortunately, Price had left Columbia early in the filming of Ghostbusters and joined Universal Pictures, where he sold the title to Columbia for $500,000 plus 1% of the film’s profits. However, due to Hollywood’s accounting rules, the picture never produced enough money for Universal to be owed a payment.
