Jungle Cruise Storyline

Don Aguirre leads a group of Spanish conquistadors to South America in 1556 in search of the Lágrimas de Cristal[b] Tree, whose blossoms are said to cure illness, heal injuries, and lift curses. The Puka Michuna tribe uses the Tree’s blooms to treat the survivors after the majority of the conquistadors had died. When the tribal leader refuses to give the location of the Tree, Aguirre stabs him and sets fire to the town. The dying chief curses the conquistadors, rendering them immortal and unable to leave the Amazon River’s sight; anyone attempting to flee is recaptured by the jungle.

Dr. Lily Houghton’s Tears of the Moon research is presented to the Royal Society in London in 1916 by her brother, MacGregor, who claims that the Tree’s petals could change medicine and aid the British war effort. The Houghtons desire access to an arrowhead artifact they recently acquired. It, together with an old Amazon map, Lily believes, is the key to discovering the Tree. The society rejects the request, claiming that the Tree is a legend and that female scientists are inferior. Lily grabs the arrowhead, narrowly avoiding Prince Joachim, a ruthless German prince on the lookout for the Tree.

Meanwhile, Joachim locates the petrified conquistadors in a cave and frees them by diverting the river, under the condition that they collect the arrowhead for him; the Spaniards attack the tribe and mortally knife Frank. Lily manages to get away with the arrowhead. The pursuing Spaniards are captured by vines as she crosses the curse’s boundary, drawing them back into the bush.

Lily and Frank continue their journey to the La Luna Rota[c] Waterfall, where they locate and raise a submerged temple. In the meantime, Joachim kidnaps MacGregor and forces him to reveal Lily’s whereabouts. In the temple that holds the Tree, Frank, Lily, MacGregor, the Germans, and the Spaniards all converge. The arrowhead is shown to be a heart-shaped locket housing a gemstone. The dormant tree blooms under the blood moon when the jewel and locket are inserted into the trunk. Lily recovers one flower during the fight.

The Germans drown, Joachim is crushed, and Frank’s boat smashes into the river, paralyzing him and the Spaniards. Lily sacrifices the flower to lift Frank’s curse and restore his mortality, realizing her true affections for him. Frank, who had planned to terminate his life, decides to stay alive in order to be with Lily. The moon’s final beam sprouts a solitary flower, allowing Lily to continue her studies.

The Royal Society offers Lily full membership after their triumphant return to England, which she declines and instead leads Frank through London.
