Kate Storyline

Kate is a sniper and assassin who eliminates targets chosen by Varrick, her loyal mentor, and handler. Varrick reared her as a father figure after she was orphaned as a youngster, giving her significant weapons and fighting training and eventually inducting her into his private squad of wetwork specialists.

Kate is in Osaka to assassinate an officer of a large yakuza syndicate when the film begins, but he refuses to take the shot since he is accompanied by a child. Varrick insists that she shoot the target, so she does. While Kate’s mission is completed successfully, the violation of her personal code of not killing in the presence of children causes her considerable distress. She tells Varrick that she will complete one final mission before retiring and beginning a new life.

Kate encounters a charismatic man, Stephen, at her hotel’s bar, just before the final assignment. They drink a bottle of wine together then have sex in her room. She later develops signs of dizziness while assembling her sniper’s nest, causing her to miss the shot. Kate knows Stephen poisoned her and, after crashing her car, awakens in a hospital to learn she has acute Polonium-204 poisoning and barely has twenty-four hours to live. She steals injectable stimulant medications as well as a gun and sets out to avenge herself on the person who poisoned her.

Kate follows down Stephen and his girlfriend and discovers that Sato, a yakuza linked to the Kijima crime family, blackmailed them into poisoning her. Kate tracks down Sato at a high-end restaurant and kills him alongside scores of other yakuza. She kidnaps Ani, Kijima’s niece, in search of information about the reclusive, well-guarded Boss Kijima, whom she suspects of being behind the poisoning. Kate recognizes Ani as the young woman who witnessed her father’s death during the Osaka mission.

While Kate initially intended to use Ani as bait to draw Kijima out into the open, she soon realizes that Ani’s family is plotting to murder her as part of an internal power struggle orchestrated by Kijima’s corrupt advisor, Renji. After hunting down Kijima, who explains that Renji made a deal with Varrick to merge his squad into the syndicate in exchange for killing Kijima and all of his blood relatives, Kate realizes that her faith in Varrick may have been misplaced. Knowing Kate is on the verge of death, Kijima sends her a small army of his men to attack Renji’s headquarters.

The majority of Renji and Varrick’s men are killed in a vicious gunfight, and Kijima personally beheads Renji for his betrayal. Varrick, who is keeping Ani at gunpoint, is tracked down by Kate. Varrick is fatally shot in the stomach during a quick draw between the two. Ani then assists Kate is making her way outside to the roof, where she dies, finally at peace with herself.
