Kevin Benson Career

He began his radio career in Erie and DuBois, Pennsylvania, eventually becoming a weather forecaster for WJET-TV in Erie. Later, he worked at WTAE-AM in Pittsburgh as a Saturday afternoon DJ. In September 1987, he joined WPXI, the NBC affiliate in Pittsburgh, as a part-time weatherman. In June 1990, he joined WPXI as a co-anchor on the Pittsburgh television market’s first Saturday morning news program. The trial was a success, and the model was extended to Sunday mornings.

While working part-time at WPXI, Benson explored a second profession in alcohol distribution. During the early 1980s, he worked for Stroh Brewing Corporation’s Erie headquarters; from 1984 to 1987, he was brand manager for Iron City Beer; and from the late 1980s to the early 1990s, he helped revive a bankrupt Anheuser-Busch wholesale dealer in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. These employment carried him to every tiny town in Western Pennsylvania, allowing him to have a thorough understanding of the region’s geography, which he later used as a weatherman.

Benson’s TV career was regarded as having its “defining moment” during the Blizzard of 1993, when he and a co-anchor were on the air for most of a weekend. Coworkers were unable to arrive at the station to relieve them due to the snow-covered walkways. The incident “truly placed me on the map,” according to Benson.
Benson was hired full-time by WPXI in 1998. Benson’s 2006 WPXI fuel giveaway was criticized by a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter because it allowed “commercialism to violate the confines of the newscast.”

Benson was transferred to weekday mornings by the station in April 2012, after practically all of his years at WPXI were spent reporting the weather on weekends. Benson returned for the weekend in December 2013. Benson was charged with DUI after a traffic stop by a Pennsylvania state trooper in October 2019. The traffic stop occurred on Interstate 70 south of Pittsburgh after an erratic driver dialed 911 from the roadway. Benson’s blood alcohol level was 0.311, nearly four times the legal limit in Pennsylvania of 0.08. Traces of benzoylecgonine, a cocaine metabolite, were also discovered in his system.

Scott Trabandt, WPXI News chief, announced Benson’s departure on November 19, 2019. Trabandt would not comment on the circumstances. When contacted via phone by the Tribune-Review, Benson declined to respond. There was no word on whether Mr. Benson had been fired or resigned from the station.
