Lamb Plot

A herd of horses in Iceland gets startled by an unknown, loudly breathing object that approaches a barn. Later, Mara and her husband Ingvar are astonished to discover that one of their pregnant sheep has given birth to a strange human/sheep hybrid.

Mara and Ingvar begin to love the hybrid lamb as if it were their own child, adopting her and naming her Ada after Maria’s stillborn daughter. Ada’s biological mother begins to be a bother, regularly contacting Ada and lingering outside the couple’s home. Mara shoots Ada’s mother and buries her body in a small, unmarked grave shortly after she goes missing and is subsequently found next to her mother. Pétur, Ingvar’s brother, arrives to the farmhouse just before the death and sees the action before sleeping in the barn, unbeknownst to her.

Pétur, who makes sexual approaches towards Mara whenever she is alone, is upset by Ada and believes that “it’s an animal, not a child.” Ingvar claims that the entire scenario has brought them “joy.” Pétur, increasingly enraged and troubled by Mara and Ingvar’s strange relationship to Ada, takes her for a walk early in the morning while everyone is sleeping, intending to shoot her. He is later seen calmly sleeping with Ada after a sorrowful change of heart, and quickly becomes an uncle-like role to her.

Ada sees the unknown entity from previously near the barn one evening while Mara, Pétur, and Ingvar are having a drunken party. After that, the monster kills the family’s dog before stealing the pistol. After the party, an inebriated Ingvar retires to his bed. Pétur begins making sexual moves towards Mara once more. When she refuses his advances, Pétur says that he saw Mara murder Ada’s mother and tries to blackmail her into having sex with him by threatening to tell Ada.

Mara retaliates by pretending to be captivated by Pétur, shutting him in a closet, and drowning out his cries with the piano. Mara ultimately has had enough of Pétur and drives him to the bus station the next morning, where he is dropped off and sent home. Ingvar takes Ada to fix the broken tractor, which had broken down earlier when Pétur was driving it, after waking up to discover Mara and Pétur vanished. The monster, revealed to be a ram/man hybrid, emerges on their way home and shoots Ingvar in the neck before carrying a sobbing Ada and going away into the forest.

When Mara arrives home, she discovers that Ingvar and Ada have vanished. She embarks on a broad search for the two. Later, she discovers Ingvar’s body and weeps bitterly over the loss of her husband and infant child. Mara is shown roaming across the wilderness in astonishment before facing the camera and closing her tear-filled eyes.
