Limbo (2020 film)

Limbo is a British comedy-drama film directed by Ben Sharrock that will be released in 2020.  The video follows four asylum seekers who are residing on a secluded Scottish island and taking cultural awareness workshops while waiting for their refugee claims to be processed.

The film was named an Official Selection of the 2020 Cannes Film Festival, however, due to the physical festival’s cancellation due to the COVID-19 epidemic, it was not screened.  The film has received favorable reviews and has been nominated for various awards.

Limbo received four nominations for the 2020 British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs), including Best Actor for Amir El-Masry, Breakthrough Producer for Irune Gurtubai, and Best Cinematography for Nick Cooke, for which it won Breakthrough Producer.  It has also received two British Academy Film Awards nominations, including Outstanding British Film.

Limbo  film Release Date

On September 12, 2020, the film made its global premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. MUBI had previously secured the film’s distribution rights in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Prior to being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was scheduled to have its global premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2020. Focus Features bought the film’s U.S. distribution rights in February 2021. It was released on April 30th, 2021 in the United States, and July 30th, 2021 in the United Kingdom.

Plot Summary

A unique perspective on the refugee experience. A group of newcomers awaits the outcome of their asylum requests on a fictional remote Scottish island. Among them is Omar, a young Syrian musician who has lugged his grandfather’s oud all the way from Syria.
