Malcolm & Marie Film Storyline

Plot Summary & Review

With his girlfriend, Marie Jones, writer-director Malcolm Elliott (John David Washington) returns home from his film premiere (Zendaya). Following the passionate crowd response to the screening, Malcolm is looking forward to the critical reviews. He encourages Marie to tell him what’s hurting her when he notices she’s upset. She tells him she is furious that she was not recognized or acknowledged in his speech at the premiere, despite her reluctance to cause a dispute in the middle of the night.

Because she was a drug addict when they met, Marie believes she is the inspiration for his film, a drama about a struggling black female drug addict named Imani. Malcolm dismisses her charges, arguing that Imani is a composite of several persons rather than being based on her. Marie claims that if they hadn’t been together, he wouldn’t have been able to convey Imani’s issues with drug usage and addiction in the same way. Malcolm believes Marie is exaggerating, arguing that she is jealous of the actress who played Imani since she stopped performing years ago and that she is transferring her personal difficulties onto him and his film. Marie reaffirms her stance on his lack of acknowledgment and refers to him by his first name.

While Marie is bathing, Malcolm tells her about the several women with whom he had relationships and how they influenced the character of Imani, claiming that only Imani’s emotions of hopelessness were inspired by Marie. While the two are sitting calmly outside after drying off after the water, she answers by playing Dionne Warwick’s song “Get Rid of Him” on her phone.

Returning inside, Malcolm locates and reads the first critical review of his picture. Despite the excellent review, he goes on a rant about the white female critic’s political interpretation of his film, which he did not intend. He complains that instead of judging him on his own merits, film critics focus too much on his black male identity and project politics into their judgments. Marie mocks his enraged reaction to the favorable review and his inability to accept criticism before the two appear to be reuniting after their disagreement.

Before they can start having sex, Marie irritates him by asking why he didn’t cast her as Imani, claiming that she would have contributed tenderness and honesty to the role that would have improved the film. After violently accusing each other of being egocentric, Marie pulls out a knife and acts out a scene as Imani to exhibit authenticity, frightening but impressing Malcolm with her realism. The two dispute again in their bedroom, until Marie lectures him about taking her for granted and his failure to recognize how their actual love for each other inspired the movie.

They ultimately stop arguing and retire to bed without saying anything to each other, merely thanking each other before falling asleep. Malcolm wakes up in the morning light alone in his bed. He finds Marie alone outside and joins her as they gaze across the horizon, their relationship’s fate undetermined.
