Pieces of a Woman Plot
A young Boston couple, Martha and Sean, are expecting their first child. Sean resents Martha’s mother, Elizabeth, a wealthy Holocaust survivor who is purchasing a minivan for the family.
Sean contacts their midwife Barbara, who is unavailable, and sends another midwife named Eva in her place. Martha goes into labor at their home, and Sean calls their midwife Barbara, who is unavailable. During contractions, Martha experiences nausea and agony, and when she reaches 10 centimeters, Eva notices the baby’s heart rate has dropped dangerously low. Sean inquires as to whether they are safe to go, and Eva advises Sean to call an ambulance. Martha gives birth to a baby girl who appears to be healthy at first. Eva then finds the baby has turned blue and tries to resuscitate her.
Martha and Sean have an appointment with a coroner the next month; Sean is eager to learn what went wrong, while Martha is hesitant. They hear that the cause of death has yet to be determined, but that they were able to identify that the infant died in a low-oxygen environment and that Eva has been charged. While Sean leaves, filled with grief, Martha stays and decides to donate the baby’s body to research.
Martha and Sean’s relationship remains strained, as does Martha’s relationship with her mother, who wants to bury the baby and hold a funeral. Martha and Sean are both still depressed. Sean returns the automobile Elizabeth purchased for him.
After almost seven years of sobriety, he has sex with Suzanne, Martha’s cousin, and consumes cocaine. Suzanne, who is also the prosecuting attorney for Eva, tells him that a prospective lawsuit against her might be highly profitable.
Elizabeth informs Martha that she must attend Eva’s trial during a stressful family gathering at her home, and she blames Martha for her baby’s death because she chose to have a home birth. Elizabeth then informs Sean that she has never liked him and offers him a significant sum of money if he will leave and never return. Sean is dropped off at Logan International Airport by Martha, and he is on his way to Seattle.
Martha testified during Eva’s trial months later. After her evidence, the judge gives her the opportunity to address the court, and she says that Eva is not to blame for her death. She returns home to find that the apple seeds she had placed in her refrigerator have sprouted. Martha pours her daughter’s ashes into the river from the bridge Sean helped to build a month later.
A tiny girl climbs an apple tree, picks an apple, and eats it years later. Lucianna, Martha calls her name and then assists her down the stairs. They enter the building together.

Pieces of a Woman Streaming
For women suffering even the least bit of concern about their pregnancy, Netflix’s Pieces of a Woman probably requires a trigger notice. The opening sequence of the film, a frightening and tragic portrayal of childbirth, is evocative, searing, and potentially traumatic, a worst-case scenario made all too true.
Pieces of a Woman filming location
Principal photography began on December 3, 2019, and ran through the end of January 2020 in Montreal, Canada.
The film is known for its opening 24-minute long take labor scene, called “The Scene” by The Guardian’s Adrian Horton and described by Entertainment Weekly as “one of the most controversial scenes of the year.” Wéber had not anticipated a one-shot take, which Mundruczó had planned from the beginning, but she knew she needed all the information.
