Prisoners of the Ghostland Film Storyline

Plot Summary  & Review

A settlement called Samurai Town is ruled by an unscrupulous Governor who has blended elements of Japanese society (both modern and pre-modern) and the old American West together at his whim, and is keeping a harem in a region of Japan devastated and quarantined years ago in an accident in which highly volatile nuclear waste was spilled after a crash between the waste transport and a prison bus, and is keeping a harem in a region of Japan devastated and quarantined.

Outside, the Ghostland is a desolate wasteland populated by half-crazed outcasts and irradiated environment victims. Hero, a criminal, was imprisoned shortly before the disaster as a result of a botched bank heist in which his sidekick Psycho savagely murdered numerous innocent onlookers. Psycho was later proven to have been in the jail transport that collided with the rubbish truck, causing the accident.

Bernice, one of the “granddaughters,” and her companions Stella and Nanci abandon the Governor’s residence one night, only to become lost in the Ghostland. The Governor releases Hero to rescue Bernice from the Ghostland and equips him with a bodysuit that is programmed to detonate explosive charges if he mistreats Bernice in any manner, the suit is tampered with, or Bernice is not retrieved within five days. Hero makes a defiant leaving gesture against the Governor, impressing Yasujiro, the Governor’s samurai bodyguard, whose sister is one of the Governor’s “granddaughters.”

Hero is apprehended by a band of mutant men upon entering the Ghostland, suffers a mishap, and is brought by the misfits to their cult-like enclave and their leader, Enoch. Bernice is among them, although she is half-catatonic as a result of the ordeal. Hero accidentally activates one of his suit’s explosives, destroying one of his testicles and rendering him comatose as he prepares to transfer her back. In a nightmare flashback, Hero identifies Bernice as a young child whose mother was killed when Hero attempted to flee the police during the bank robbery, and who was later taken in by the Governor.

Hero is knocked out by the mutants who attacked him earlier when an explosive on his arm goes off, just as the assailants vanish. The detonation, on the other hand, awakens Bernice from her stupor.

Meanwhile, Stella returns from the Ghostland and is arrested by the Governor’s forces, who make Yasujiro kill her, thereby turning him against the Governor. Hero, backed by Psycho and the mutants, his fellow convicts from the catastrophic event, stirs the Ghostlanders into a revolt against the Governor after having a revelation about his unintentional involvement in the cataclysm while unconscious. When the Governor refuses to unlock the suit and Hero pretends to hold Bernice hostage, Bernice’s companion Susie, horrified by the Governor’s treatment of her, kills several of the Governor’s bodyguards with a minigun.

The remaining enemies are defeated by Hero, Bernice, and Yasujiro, who then square off against and murder Yasujiro, while Bernice shoots the Governor. Hero, Bernice, and Susie watch as Samurai Town comes alive with fresh, freer life now that the oppressor is dead and the outcasts have been freed.
