Raya and the Last Dragon Film Storyline

Plot Summary & Review

The Druun, malevolent spirits who turn humans and dragons to stone, have ruined Kumandra’s rich realm. The last dragon, Sisu, concentrates her magic into a jewel and banishes the Druun, resurrecting Kumandra’s people but not the dragons. Due to a power struggle over the gem, Kumandra’s people are divided into five tribes: Fang, Heart, Spine, Talon, and Tail, named after their locations along a dragon-shaped river.

Chief Benja of the Heart tribe, which still has ownership of the dragon gem, trains his daughter Raya to protect it 500 years later. Benja hosts a feast for the leaders of all five tribes, believing that Kumandra can be reunited. Raya befriends Namaari, the daughter of Fang tribe Chief Virana, who gives her a dragon pendant and informs her of a tale that the dragon Sisu still exists and can be called. Raya shows Namaari the location of the stone because she has faith in her. As part of a plot to assist Fang in stealing the diamond, Namaari betrays Raya. Benja and the other tribes arrive after being alerted to the raid and begin fighting over the jewel.

Raya spends the next six years trekking across Kumandra in quest of Sisu, hoping to persuade her to make another diamond and expel the Druun once more. She summons Sisu at a shipwreck in Tail; Sisu acknowledges that she did not create the diamond, but rather wielded it on behalf of her four siblings, each of whom contributed their own power to it. Raya and Sisu resolve to reclaim the gem’s four stolen pieces, reunite them, and use them to expel the Druun and free Raya’s father and those who have been petrified.

Raya and Sisu go across Tail, Talon, and Spine, regaining fragments of the gem and making new friends along the way, including youthful restaurateur Boun, baby con artist Little Noi, and fighter Tong, all of whom had lost loved ones to the Druun. Namaari goes after Raya in the hopes of obtaining the gem shards for the Fang tribe. Raya, who is wary of their new friends, asks that Sisu stay human, but Sisu reveals herself in order to save Raya from Namaari at Spine.

Sisu persuades Raya to try to form an alliance with Namaari instead of taking the final piece of the jewel at Fang. Raya returns the pendant Namaari gave her years ago as a sign of trust. Namaari, torn between her duty to Fang and her desire to aid in the Druun’s downfall, threatens them with a crossbow. Sisu tries to calm Namaari with her sword, but Raya attacks with hers, forcing Namaari’s crossbow to fire, killing Sisu.

When Sisu dies, the water in Fang’s protective canal evaporates, allowing the Druun to take control of the kingdom. Raya pursues Namaari, who she discovers lamenting her mother’s petrification. While Raya and Namaari fight, Raya’s comrades use the gem pieces to evacuate the Fang people. Raya beats Namaari and prepares to kill her, but she is stopped when she realizes her role in Sisu’s death as a result of her reluctance to trust others. Raya and Namaari are dispatched to assist the others.

Raya recalls how faith enabled Sisu to save the world as the Druun close in on her group. She encourages the others to rejoin and reunite the gem, and she expresses her trust in Namaari by handing over her gem piece and allowing the Druun to take her. The others follow suit, and Namaari puts the jewel together before the Druun petrify her. The Druun are defeated and the dragon jewel is reassembled. All Druun victims, including the dragons who resurrect Sisu, are resurrected. The tribes assemble at Heart to reunify as Kumandra, and the gang reunites with their lost loved ones, including Raya and her father.
