Plot Summary & Review

In August 1943, female flight officer Pilot Officer Maude Garrett is tasked to transport a top-secret item from Auckland, New Zealand, to Samoa. When she arrives at the airbase, she witnesses a ground crew ramp worker vanish before her eyes, only to find herself standing in front of her transport, a B-17 bomber known as The Fool’s Errand. The crew of the bomber greets her with mostly mockery, and she is quartered in the Sperry Ball turret for the takeoff. She grudgingly permits Staff Sergeant Walter Quaid, the lone crew member who is kind to her, to store her document valise because she has no more room.

Maude notices a critter clinging to the underside of the bomber’s wing while imprisoned in the turret. She reports it, but the majority of the crew, with the exception of Private Beckell, who witnesses it as well, rejects her. The hatch malfunctions when she is permitted to leave the turret, keeping her inside. They cease their attempts to open the hatch after she reacts angrily to the crew’s comments about her plight, and the commis switched off. She is abruptly attacked by the creature, a gremlin, after seeing a Japanese fighter emerge and disappear close to the bomber; she fights it off but is damaged.

A radio message informs the crew that Maude Garrett does not exist and is not registered for the flight when they contact her again to inquire about what occurred. Maude intentionally clogs the turret’s gears and prepares to defend herself as the Japanese aircraft reappears and attacks. She takes control of the turret and shoots it down, earning grudging respect from the crew.

Maude reveals she is married and boarded the bomber under her maiden name while continuing to speak with the crew, but she refuses to reveal her objective, claiming its confidentiality. The gremlin then reappears, continuing to sabotage the bomber. Private Dorn eventually notices it as well, but the others ignore him. Reeves gives the order to unzip the package, which contains a baby—Maude and Quaid’s adulterous child—suspecting Maude’s assignment is the source of their problems. Maude claims that she was severely mistreated by her husband, that she had an affair with Quaid, and that she became pregnant accidentally. Her husband, who had come to the base, had been betrayed by someone.

Three Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighters attack just as Captain Reeves returns to the airbase, and the gremlin boards the bomber injures Quaid and kidnaps the baby. Maude exits the turret and fires her revolver at the gremlin with the infant in the bag, driving it away but leaving the sack dangling perilously from the engine nacelle. Maude collects her child and reboards the airplane through the opening for the ball turret, which has been blasted off, risking a risky climb.

The gremlin strikes once more, hurling Technical Sergeant Taggart from the plane before Maude can eject it. When Japanese gunfire kills Reeves, Lieutenant Finch, and Dorn, Maude assumes command and brings the bomber down to the ground in a harsh but safe manner. The gremlin reappears and tries to kidnap the baby once more, but Maude is able to catch up and kill it. As The Fool’s Errand burns and bursts, she and the other survivors watch.
