Plot Summary & Review

Mission Commander Marina Barnett, scientist David Kim, and medical researcher Zoe Levenson make up the crew of MTS-42, a two-year mission to Mars. The upper stage of their launch vehicle is connected to the ship’s main hull by 450 meter long tethers after taking off from Earth, acting as a counterweight for inertia-based artificial gravity.

Barnett discovers launch support engineer Michael Adams, an unintentional stowaway, asleep between two modules shortly after takeoff. Michael’s body is entangled with a gadget on the ship that removes carbon dioxide from the air. The device is accidentally destroyed as he falls.

To scrub CO 2 from the air, the crew is obliged to utilize emergency lithium hydroxide canisters. Unfortunately, the added burden is too much for the canisters to handle. Barnett instructs David to conduct his algae experiment on the ship rather than at the Martian colony as planned. Only half of the algae survive, allowing only a third crew member to breathe. Without another source of oxygen, the four-person crew will perish weeks before reaching Mars.

Barnett requests a solution from mission control that will save all four passengers, but the only viable alternative – an experimental EVA to climb the tethers and gather liquid oxygen from the spent upper stage rocket – is deemed too dangerous. Barnett and David start to consider sacrificing Michael, but Zoe persuades them to wait ten days for mission control to come up with a better plan.

After three days, David breaks ranks to inform Michael of the situation and offers him a painless lethal injection. Michael is on the verge of killing himself, but Zoe intervenes and persuades him to wait a little longer. To get the liquid oxygen, she persists in ascending the tethers. The rest of the algae has died, leaving only two people with enough oxygen. He agrees to accompany her on the ascent despite the fact that he is now responsible for the deaths of two people.

Zoe and David complete the EVA and improvise a solution to fill two cylinders, enough to support two additional passengers. A high-energy solar flare sends deadly radiation their way, forcing them to abandon one of the cylinders. They make it back to the ship, but the sole oxygen cylinder is lost due to a key system failure.

The crew learns that the huge tank continues to lose oxygen due to the improvised connection after regrouping. The other three people can survive if one person is exposed to fatal radiation and collects the cylinder that was left behind on the first attempt. Marina must survive in order to pilot the ship, and the other three all volunteer to do so, but Zoe insists on doing it herself. Before succumbing to radiation illness, she manages to fill and return the cylinder to the spacecraft.

She spends her final moments outside the ship, looking up at the stars and seeing a faint Mars.
