Swallow is a film version of Nigerian author Seffi Atta’s book of the same name. It follows Niyola’s character Tolani Ajao and her buddy Rose, played by Ijeoma Grace Agu. They are coworkers at the same bank and are friends and housemates. MR Lamidi Salako, Rose’s boss, is a promiscuous man who uses his position of power to harass his secretary. No one can stand up to him because he controls the personnel department. He fires Rose one day because she refused to put up with his constant harassment.

He asks Tolani to take her position and harasses her as well. In response to his memo accusing her of insubordination, she files a complaint. Her complaint is not forwarded to the appropriate person because she is afraid of Mr. Salako, her boss, who later suspends her because she requested a vacation that she was entitled to.

Rose encounters ‘OC,’ an American returnee played by Kevin Ikeduba, who introduces her to the world of drug trafficking. She tries to persuade Tolani to join her, and she nearly succeeds until her boyfriend Sanwo (Deyemi Okanlawon) gets defrauded of all the money she borrowed from him to start a business.

After eating the medicines, Rose travels alone to London, but they explode in her stomach mid-flight, killing her. Tolani returns to the hamlet, where Sanwo finds her and informs her that her boss, Mr. Salako, has been suspended by personnel. Sanwo informs her that he has accepted a position with a consulting firm and refunds her money.

Swallow Storyline

Plot Summary & Review

Swallow follows Tolani (Eniola ‘Niyola’ Akinbo), a naive secretary who becomes involved in heroin smuggling with her streetwise friend Rose (Ijeoma Grace Agu). Tolani begins the film by describing her narrative as she returns home distraught. The story is set in the 1980s, and it takes place in Nigeria. Due to rising poverty and trades, everything from FIFA World Cups to Nigerian drug smugglers and criminal crimes is on the rise. It captures the pulse of Lagos while delving into the richness of Nigerian culture and way of life. The film’s cinematography, color scheme, and camera operation are all set in the 1980s, as are the newspaper, fashion, and electronic equipment.

It raises a variety of societal issues, including misogyny, poverty, and the patriarchal society, in addition to drug smuggling and trafficking. The story runs for 128 minutes, which is simply too long. There are numerous filler sequences and talks that do not advance the plot. We’re taking longer to get to the major conflicts. However, it’s possible that it’s done on purpose. From the perspective of the protagonists, rather than focusing on the outcomes, the novel emphasizes the process that eventually forces Tolani and Rose to make their choices. It’s as though we’re witnessing a real-life situation unfold before our eyes. Swallow appeals to me because of this. It’s unadulterated and unadulterated.

Swallow lacks tension, dramatic scenes, twists, and shouts. Something about the way Afoloyan directs his film draws us in, rather than spectacular thrills, to the stability. Akinbo did a good job portraying Tolani for a non-actor. Of course, there is a lack of emotional variety and intensity, but she does deliver her words naturally. Furthermore, her chemistry with Ijeoma Grace Agu, who is a scene-stealer in this film, is excellent! Agu’s presence helps to balance Akinbo and gives the plot additional oomph. Rose is, without a doubt, the most unforgettable character for me.
