Plot Summary & Review

William Tell is a gambler who learned to count cards during an eight-year military jail sentence. Tell’s gambling strategy is to wager small and win modestly in order to escape attention – either fame or casino bouncers. Despite the fact that he gambles almost every day, he never stays in a casino hotel; instead, he lives out of two small suitcases and sleeps in hotels, where he eliminates all dcor and covers all furniture in plain sheets secured with twine.

Tell meets La Linda, an acquaintance from the gaming industry, at a casino. She is the owner of a stable, a group of investors who support gamblers in exchange for a share of their winnings. She offers to stake William, but he declines since he does not want the responsibility.

A security industry convention is being held in the same building as the casino in Atlantic City. Tell attends a seminar given by retired Major John Gordo, but leaves nearly soon. On his way out, he is approached by Cirk Beaufort, a young man who gives him his name and phone. Tell calls the young man and agrees to meet after having a nightmare about torture in a prison camp. PFC William Tillich, a soldier who was prosecuted and sentenced for his role in the Abu Ghraib torture and prisoner abuse, notifies Tell that he knows who he is.

Cirk reveals that his father, Roger Baufort, was also a prisoner in Abu Ghraib; like Tell, he was dishonorably discharged and served time, but the ordeal led to drug addiction and violent behavior. Cirk’s mother abandoned the family, and Roger eventually committed suicide. Gordo was superior to Tillich and the elder Baufort and trained them in improved interrogation tactics, but he escaped accusations of responsibility since he was involved as a “civilian consultant.” Cirk believes Gordo responsible for his family’s deaths and seeks Tell’s assistance in capturing, torturing, and killing him in retaliation. Tell declines, but offers to accompany Cirk while he gambles in an attempt to hone his skills.

Tell assures La Linda that he is interested in establishing an agreement at their next stop. He tells her that he wants to compete in the World Series of Poker in order to win enough money to help Cirk pay off his obligations and start a new life, following which he plans to retire. Tell makes money in the early rounds of the WSOP, but loses to Mr. USA, an unpleasant Ukrainian player who has adopted a jingoistic American identity. He befriends Cirk and develops feelings for La Linda, but keeps his distance as he continues to make money gambling.

Cirk says he still intends to kill Gordo at a qualifying round in Panama City. Tell returns Cirk to his motel and confronts him with a severe interrogator character. Cirk receives $150,000 from his gaming gains, which will allow him to pay off his and his mother’s obligations and return to school. He threatens Cirk with violence if he does not return to his mother in Oregon and forget about Gordo; Cirk leaves with the money. Tell, who has started dating La Linda, makes it to the final table of the WSOP. He receives a message from Cirk while on a break, indicating that instead of coming home, he went to Gordo’s house to kill him.

Tell drives to Gordo’s house late at night, covering the furniture as he does in his motel rooms. Tell grabs Gordo at gunpoint as he gets home, exposing who he is and why he is there. Tell takes Gordo into another room for a “dramatic reenactment” of their time in Abu Gharib rather than shooting him. Both men scream in pain and Tell eventually emerges from the room severely injured. He dials 9-1-1 to report a homicide.

Tell is held in the same military jail as before, and he accepts the routine and spartan environment since he believes that is what he deserves. When La Linda arrives for a visit, the two reach out and place a single finger on the glass that separates them.
