The Green Knight Release Date

On March 16, 2020, it was set to make its global premiere at South by Southwest, followed by a theatrical release on May 29, 2020. The festival was canceled, and the film was removed from the schedule, because of the COVID-19 epidemic.

David Lowery, too, was dissatisfied with the film’s original cut and spent six months re-editing and revising it. The release date was then pushed out to July 30, 2021. The film was supposed to be released on August 6 in the United Kingdom, but it was postponed owing to the outbreak of the Delta strain of COVID-19. The film was later rescheduled for release on September 24th, 2021, in theaters and on Amazon Prime.

The Green Knight Storyline

Gawain is seated alone on a throne in kingly regalia in a large hall. As a storyteller relates his story, a crown drops down from above. His head erupts in flames as the crown lands.

Gawain is awoken in a brothel by his lover, the commoner Essel, on Christmas morning. After being punished by his mother Morgan le Fay, he goes to Camelot and attends a feast at the Round Table with his uncle King Arthur, who invites Gawain to join him. Le Fay performs a magical ritual in a tower. On horseback, the mysterious Green Knight enters Arthur’s court and confronts the knights, saying that any knight who can land a blow on him will receive his green a. However, the following Christmas, that knight must journey to the Green Chapel and endure an equivalent stroke in return.

Gawain’s story is told again and again over the next year, but he spends his days drinking and worrying about his upcoming confrontation with the Knight. The King reminds Gawain to keep his half of the bargain as Christmas approaches. Gawain mounts his horse and rides to the Green Chapel, carrying the green ax and a green girdle sewn by his mother, who claims that if he wears it, no harm will come to him.

He arrives at an abandoned cottage late at night and falls asleep in the bed. Gawain is startled awake by the ghost of a young woman named Winifred, who requests that Gawain fetch her head from a nearby spring. He finds her skeleton on the bed when he returns with her skull, to which he adds the skull. The ax was returned to him the next morning.

The Green Knight awakens on Christmas morning after Gawain has waited all night. The Knight swings the ax to finish the challenge but stops short twice as Gawain flinches. Gawain flees and returns to Camelot before the third stroke. When his uncle and aunt die, he is knighted and becomes king. Gawain abandons Essel when she bears his son, taking the infant and marrying a noblewoman instead. His son grows up to be a soldier and dies in combat. Gawain becomes a despised king over a long period of time. He pulls the green girdle from inside his abdomen while his fortress is under siege and his family abandons him. His head falls to the ground, as though decapitated.

Gawain awakens in the Green Chapel, still kneeling on the ground, from his vision. Gawain takes off his girdle and informs the Knight that he is ready. “Now, off with your head,” the Knight exclaims as he praises Gawain’s valor and drags his finger across Gawain’s throat.

A young girl finds the King’s crown and puts it on her head in a post-credits scene.
