The Harder They Fall Plot

Rufus Buck and his gang arrive at Nat Love’s house, gun down Nat’s parents, and carve a cross into Nat’s forehead while he is eating dinner with his parents.

Love, now an adult and an outlaw, murders one of the gang members in retaliation twenty years later. Meanwhile, Bill Pickett, a sharpshooter, and Jim Beckwourth, a quickdraw, attack another gang and seize their loot from a recent bank robbery. The lone survivor informs them that Buck is the rightful owner of the $25,000 they have taken. Love visits his former lover Mary Fields, the owner of a saloon chain. Pickett informs Love of the robbery.

Buck is rescued by Buck’s gang, lead by Trudy Smith and quickdraw Cherokee Bill, from a train departing Yuma, where he had been imprisoned. They arrive at Redwood City, his previous stronghold, now ruled by Buck’s associate Wiley Escoe. Despite being left in control by Buck, Escoe has profited from the position at the expense of the town. Buck beats him up and tells him to get out of town. Buck gathers the citizens of the town and informs them that they will need $50,000 to rescue the town, and he recommends a levy to raise the funds. He kills a guy who objects, but he understands that the townspeople will not be able to raise the whole amount he need.

Marshal Bass Reeves arrives at Field’s saloon to arrest Love and handcuffs him. Reeves and Love orchestrated the arrest in order to track down Buck without involving Love’s gang: Reeves is enraged that Buck has been pardoned, and he knows Love is eager for vengeance. Suspecting a hoax, Love’s crew, accompanied by Fields and her buddy Cuffee, pursue Love and Reeves and insist on joining them. They run across Escoe, who informs them that Buck is back in Redwood. Under the guise of buying Smith’s bar, Fields volunteers to scout Redwood. Love proposes to her the night before she goes, but she declines.

When Fields arrives in Redwood, Smith kidnaps her and abuses her. She then threatens to hold Fields hostage for a day before killing her unless someone comes to rescue her. The same night, Love’s group comes, but Smith insists that Love join Fields in captivity, which he does. Smith has Love beaten, and Buck informs him that in order for Fields to be released, Love must rob a bank in Marysville, a White town, and hand the money over to Buck. Love and Cuffee rob the bank and flee without murdering anyone.

Even if they pay over the money, Reeves and Love agree that Buck will not release Mary. Escoe provides them with firearms and dynamite in a cart. They transport the money to Redwood in two automobiles, one of which is a dummy, and both of which are dynamite-charged. Love passes over the money after the phony wagon is destroyed, killing some of Buck’s goons, but is stopped from leaving by Cherokee Bill. Beckwourth challenges Bill to a quickdraw competition, but while counting down, Bill shoots and kills him. Pickett, Cuffee, Reeves, and Love kill most of Buck’s group in a gunfight, and the money is destroyed in another explosion. Buc kills Escoe after he infiltrates Buck’s residence with more dynamite.

Cuffee frees Fields, and she follows Smith, whom she overcomes in a hand-to-hand combat. Pickett is shot in the back by Bill during a lull, and Bill is murdered by Cuffee. Buck’s house is invaded by love, but Buck is unprepared to protect himself. Buck, on the other hand, tells him about his own parents: his outlaw father murdered his mother after years of violence, then abandoned Buck when he was eleven years old. Buck tracked found his father and discovered that he had changed his ways and given up his name, as well as revealing that his father was also Love’s. He claims that the real revenge was pushing Love into outlawry, and that he disfigured Love’s face so that he would identify him when he returned.

Pickett and Beckwourth are buried alongside another cemetery named “Nat Love” by Love and his comrades. Love will be declared dead by Reeves, and Cuffee will join Reeves in law enforcement. Fields and Love ride away, while Smith watches from afar.
