The Last Duel is a drama movie about the book The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Ancient France by Eric Jager. An alteration of Jager’s book was first published in 2015, though it was not officially greenlit until July 2019. Affleck and Damon were the stars and co-writers that month, with Comer and Driver joining the cast that fall. video shooting took place in France and Ireland from February to October 2020, with a break of several months due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The release date has been pushed back to October 15, 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. On September 10, 2021, it made its global premiere at the Venice Film Festival. For 45 days, the film will only be available in theaters before being released on digital platforms.

Francis Lawrence was set to helm the picture and Shaun Grant was set to write the screenplay when the project was first revealed in July 2015. The picture rights lapsed after no further developments were revealed. Ridley Scott was planned to direct the film, which will star Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, as well as write the screenplay with Nicole Holofcener, according to Deadline Hollywood in July 2019. Due to the subject matter, it was unclear whether Walt Disney Studios would create the picture as a result of the Disney–Fox merger; nonetheless, Deadline Hollywood reported that “every studio in town” was “waiting in the wings” should Disney sell the rights.

Filming in the medieval castle of Berzé-le-Châtel (near Mâcon), Burgundy, France began on February 14, 2020, and lasted until March 12, 2020. (with a film crew of 300 people including 100 extras) From March 23, 2020, to March 30, 2020, filming was scheduled to take place in Ireland, with locations including Bective Abbey in County Meath, Cahir Castle in County Tipperary, and numerous places in Dublin and County Wicklow.

On March 13, 2020, Disney stated that the shoot would be postponed indefinitely due to worries for the cast and crew, as well as travel restrictions in Europe, due to the current COVID-19 epidemic. Filming commenced in late September 2020, and the production wrapped on October 14, 2020, in Ireland.
