The Last Mercenary (2021 Movie)
The Last Mercenary is a 2021 action comedy movie. A foreign former undercover service agent must urgently return to France when his estranged son is wrongly accused of arms and drug trafficking by the government, following a mistake by an enthusiastic bureaucrat and a mafia accomplishment. When closing credits of “The Last Mercenary,” we see a montage of Jean-Claude Van Damme in the different getups he is wasted during the movie (a fuzzy beard; a mustache and American cap; a blond wig; a Bond tuxedo; drag).

It’s all part of the illusion that the makers of “The Last Mercenary” (who are French) are clearly under that Jean-Claude Van Damme is no minor action star — that he’s an entertainer, an icon of such ironic appeal that we follow him anywhere, even though the paces of an awkward caper movie like this one. The Last Mercenary was directed by David Charhon and a screenplay by Charhon and Ismael Sy Savane. It was released on July 30, 2021, on Netflix. the movie received positive reviews from the critics and it was released fast due to video on demand. After his estranged son is wrongfully convicted of weapons and drug trafficking by the government as a result of an overzealous bureaucrat’s error and a mafia operation, a mystery former secret service agent must return to France shortly.
Richard only returns to France in “The Last Mercenary” after learning that the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has mistaken Archibald—who was living under an assumed name and with diplomatic Simyon, a callow armaments dealer from the imaginary country of Taarghistan, gains amnesty thanks to his father’s clever negotiations. Richard is the only one who can keep Archibald safe long enough to not only apprehend Simyon, but also the French officials who have been protecting him from arrest. A witty comedy of misidentification ensues.
