The Starling Movie Review
After their young daughter died of SIDS, the Maynards, a married couple, are in mourning. Jack (Chris O’Dowd), the spouse, is in a residential mental hospital, but Lilly (Melissa McCarthy) remains at home, coping with her own problems alone.
Lilly is attempting to maintain her composure in anticipation of Jack’s return from the facility. She works in a grocery shop and is responsible for the upkeep of her family’s property. As if Lilly’s difficulties weren’t bad enough, a starling in her backyard begins tormenting and attacking her, and she becomes obsessed with putting an end to it. She’s also driving two hours to see Jack every week, thinking whether he actually wants to return home and what life would be like if he did.
A counselor at Jack’s hospital suggests Lilly contact someone for her own mental health before he returns home, putting Jack’s pain ahead of her own. This takes her to Larry Fine’s (Kevin Kline) office, where he is an eccentric psychiatrist-turned-veterinarian. As they assist each other in recognizing and confronting their challenges, they establish an unusual and improbable friendship. He assists her with the starling while also incorporating suggestions to help her cope with her sadness into the talk. Lilly begins to develop feelings for the bird, and when she unintentionally hits it with a stone and nearly kills it, she seeks Larry’s assistance in reviving it.
Instead of abusing each other, she and the bird begin to tolerate one another.
Jack and Lilly find themselves back at their old house, facing the world together.

Is The Starling based on a true story?
‘The Starling,’ on the other hand, is not based on a genuine story. The script was written by Matt Harris, who later revised it in collaboration with director Theodore Melfi, who changed the gender roles of the film’s primary characters.
