Plot Summary & Review

Kidnapped and forced to compete in an underground battle ring, an idealistic woman is kidnapped. Every night is a battle for her life as she plots to overthrow her captors and save the lives of countless others who are trapped in the same cycle.

The film begins with Aella (Mair Mulroney) looking for work in a metropolis. This opening scene, which also serves as the credits, lasts over three minutes and features Aella roaming about a town in slow motion as if she were in a music video from the early 2000s. This is not a nice way to start a movie.

She comes upon an ad for an open audition after struggling to find work. Aella lands her audition despite having no prior acting experience. She surprises and relieves herself as she exits her audition, but her happiness is short-lived as she is knocked out and taken. Aella wakes up shackled and unsure of what has happened to her or where she is. Her fighting skills, on the other hand, are swiftly put to the test when she is forced to battle another lady to determine how she compares. Aella soon finds she’s in an underground battle ring with other women who have gone through similar experiences. She and the others intend to overthrow the government and flee.

After that, I found myself checking the clock to see how much time was left in Unchained, which drags in every manner possible. It wasn’t that there wasn’t enough action. It did have a lot of battle scenes, but they weren’t really good – more on that later. The one-dimensional characters and too basic premise are what make the novel feel so bloated. Warden Georgia (Larry L. Andrews), the cartoonish villain, isn’t even complex enough to despise. Warden Georgia is, if anything, absurd. There are a few “twists,” but nothing that will surprise you. Even though certain plot moments were probably meant to be horrifying, there is no actual shock value.
