Vivo Film Storyline

Plot Summary & Review

Andrés Hernández and his kinkajou Vivo perform in the plaza of Havana, Cuba. Andrés receives a letter from Marta Sandoval, an old acquaintance, the day after their gig, informing him that she is quitting her music career. The letter invites them to reconnect at the Mambo Cabana in Miami, Florida, where Andrés would finally tell Marta how he feels about her through a song he made especially for her. Vivo, content with their life in Cuba, refuses to assist Andrés and storms out. Andrés died in his sleep the next morning, and burial service is held in the square that night, with Andrés’ niece and her daughter Gabi in attendance, before they return to their home in Key West.

Vivo, ashamed of his prior hesitancy, pledges to persuade Marta to listen to Andrés’ music. With Gabi and Rosa, he stows away to Key West. Gabi is overjoyed when she finds Vivo hidden among her belongings and tells him about how she is an outcast in her hometown because she is different from everyone else and refuses to join her girl scout troop, the Sand Dollars. Gabi discovers Andrés’ music and promises to assist Vivo in delivering it to Marta. Gabi and Vivo acquire bus tickets to Marta’s event under the premise of attending a cookie sale in town, but they are stopped by three other Sand Dollars who are interested in Vivo. Gabi and Vivo are able to flee, but they miss the bus.

While looking for Gabi, Vivo comes across Dancarino, a roseate spoonbill who has been unable to find love with one of his own. He is able to win Valentina’s heart with the help of Vivo. Vivo is eventually rescued by the two from Lutador, a noise-hating Burmese python. Meanwhile, Gabi realizes that she was being followed on a boat by the Sand Dollars, who are holding Andrés’ song hostage until she brings them to Vivo. Vivo protects the girls when they are ambushed by Lutador, but the song is ruined in the process. Vivo is depressed and contemplates returning to Cuba until he realizes he and Gabi can recreate the song because he knows the music and Gabi knows the words.

Gabi and Vivo try to break into the Mambo Cabana, but Gabi is unable to do so and urges Vivo to continue without her. Security and her enraged mother, who had found that she had run away, quickly apprehend her. Marta, who recognizes Vivo from Andrés’ obituary photo, finds him and sings the song. Marta gets energized by the song and chooses to perform on stage. Vivo then tracks down Gabi and Rosa, who are squabbling in their car on their way home. Gabi finally tells her mother how she feels: she felt compelled to join Vivo’s mission to deliver the music because Andrés never got to tell Marta how much he loved her, just as she never got to tell her father before he died.

Rosa, overcome to tears, assures her daughter that her father knew how much she loved him and drives Gabi and Vivo back to the performance just in time to watch Marta perform Andrés’ song. Vivo stays in Florida with Gabi and Rosa, and Gabi and Vivo put on their own show with Marta in the city.
