Zack Snyder's Justice League

Zack Snyder’s Justice League

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is the 2021 director’s cut of the 2017 American superhero blockbuster Justice League. It shows Justice League, the fifth film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), and the follow-up to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), as director Zack Snyder intended it before leaving the project.

Warner Bros. Pictures Justice League, which was released in 2017, had a rough production. Between 2016 and 2017, the script underwent significant revisions both before and during production. Following the death of his daughter in May 2017, Snyder stepped aside during post-production and was replaced by Joss Whedon, who finished the picture as an uncredited director. Whedon directed reshoots and other adjustments that included a brighter tone and more humor, as well as a major reduction in the runtime in compliance with a Warner Bros. directive.

In the United States, Zack Snyder’s Justice League premiered on HBO Max on March 18, 2021. That year, it was the fourth most-streamed film on the platform. The majority of critics thought it was better than the 2017 theatrical version, praising Snyder’s direction and better characterization but criticizing the film’s length.

Plot Summary & Review

Darkseid and his Parademon army attempt to conquer Earth using the three Mother Boxes five thousand years ago. A coalition of Old Gods, Amazons, Atlanteans, humans, and a Green Lantern defeats them, leaving the Mother Boxes behind, which are hidden separately. In the present, the reactivation of the Boxes is triggered by Superman’s death, luring Steppenwolf, Darkseid’s disgraced lieutenant. Steppenwolf wants to win back Darkseid’s favor by assembling the boxes into “The Unity,” which will terraform Earth into a replica of Apokolips, their homeworld.

Steppenwolf battles the Amazons on Themyscira and captures the Mother Box, which they are guarding. Diana Prince is warned by the Amazons, then hears of Darkseid’s attack on Earth and Steppenwolf, and informs Bruce Wayne. They want to build a metahuman team to preserve the planet. After failing to attract Arthur Curry, Bruce seeks out Barry Allen while Diana seeks out Victor Stone. Victor refuses to join until his father Silas and other S.T.A.R. Labs employees are kidnapped by Parademons looking for the human-hidden Mother Box. Steppenwolf kidnaps and slaughters the Atlantean Guards guarding their Mother Box, leaving only Mera and a reluctant Arthur to protect it.

The facility is flooded until Arthur helps the kidnapped employees escape, despite the fact that the crew saves them. Victor finds the last Mother Box he had stashed away. He explains that the Boxes can rearrange matter at their masters’ behest, revealing that it was used to repair his body following a vehicle accident. The trio discovers they can use the Box to resuscitate Superman, but Steppenwolf will undoubtedly find out about it. In the meantime, Steppenwolf sees the Anti-Life Equation, a secret power desired by Darkseid, and notifies his master. Clark Kent is reborn as an amnesiac, but he assaults the group. Lois Lane arrives and calms Clark down before he can kill Bruce.

Silas sacrifices himself to supercharge the remaining Mother Box with laser heat, allowing Victor to track it. The five heroes head to an abandoned Russian city, where Steppenwolf plans to establish the Unity, without Superman. They defeat the Parademons, and Superman arrives to defeat Steppenwolf, but Victor is unable to separate the boxes. The Unity is formed, and the planet is destroyed. Before the shockwave hits him, Barry enters the Speed Force, reversing time to give Victor the charge he needs to split the Boxes with Superman.

Steppenwolf is killed, and his body is thrown back to Darkseid’s feet on Apokolips via a portal. Darkseid swears to return to Earth in order to finish his search for the Anti-Life Equation.

Following the battle, Bruce, Diana, and Alfred Pennyworth resolve to establish a team headquarters at Wayne Manor. Barry gets a position with the Central City police force, Victor is inspired to utilize his abilities for good by an audio message left by Silas, Arthur visits his father, and Clark continues his life as a reporter and Superman.

In the epilogue, Lex Luthor has escaped from Arkham Asylum and is visited by Slade Wilson, who learns about Batman’s secret identity from Luthor. Bruce receives a visit from Secretary of Defense Calvin Swanwick, who is revealed to be the Martian Manhunter, after waking up from a strange dream of the future. He expresses his gratitude to Bruce for putting together the squad before vowing to keep in touch in order to prepare for Darkseid’s return.
